Never Let Me Go

“I keep thinking about this river somewhere, with the water moving really fast. And these two people in the water, trying to hold onto each other, holding on as hard as they can, but in the end it's just too much. The current's too strong. They've got to let go, drift apart. That's how it is with us. It's a shame, Kath, because we've loved each other all our lives. But in the end, we can't stay together forever.”

A Review:

Never Let Me Go is a somber love story that takes you on a journey between a group of friends in unique circumstances. Kathy, the main character, recounts her past involving her peers and how much importance these memories have to her. She delves into prominent memories involving her two best friends to create a silhouette of her life up to her present-day, revealing the intricate dynamics between the trio and the society surrounding them. As much as this book is about the love involving these three friends, it is also a critique of the world around us and how technology can shape the future we live in. It brings up ethical and moral dilemmas that may not be too far in the future for us. Never Let Me Go dissects how people interact on a microscopic level as well as a macroscopic level. The book can be analyzed through many different lenses and can become better upon this reflection. Although it may not have been my most favorite book to read, I can see where people can fall in love with the novel, and it can become one of their favorites. Kazuo Ishiguro has an eloquent style that carries the reader along through a tangible story. He was tactical with every detail down to the importance of certain characters' actions, to when he used certain words, and how he introduced new information. Not op of this, he provokes a more profound sense of emotion through the use of vocabulary, succinct descriptions, and the style of narration. The narration style gives the reader an intimate feel for the story and lets the reader experience these memories with Kathy. By the time the reader reaches the end of this metafiction, all the layers to the novel are gone, and the reader can see the true gem hidden inside. All the emotions, themes, and thoughts come to the forefront. However, there is an air to the book that lets the reader decide how to interpret everything and choose their own way to determine right from wrong. This may be due to the tension that the storytelling also creates. The immense tension created through the book hangs with you to the end and leaves you wondering about each one of the characters,
